The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) through its order dated 22.12.2021 stated that the declaration regarding Non-Veg or Veg-Food is mandatory irrespective of the percentage of any ingredient in the food.
The difference between Veg and Non-Veg is thus far being practiced by every FBO using Green and Red symbols.
To make the Food System more reliable and transparent FSSAI has made it mandatory to use Non-Veg Symbol even if your product contains Food preservatives /additives /colors obtained from Animal Origin, but this does not include milk or milk products, honey or beeswax.
Examples of animal origin additives include-
- Omega-3-fatty acids (from fish & seals)
- Edible Bone Phosphate (From animal bones. Since the BSE crisis mainly from pork, but other animal bones are used)
- Carmine (Color isolated from the insects Coccus cacti)
- Gelatine (From animal bones- mainly from pork, but other animal bones are used)
- Potassium Nitrate (from animal waste)
